SUMMARY:Pre-Show Interview with Wayne Baker Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pre-show interview with Wayne Baker Brooks at 6pm on Friday\, May 27th at the future home of the Cleveland Rocks Shop (former Music Saves storefront). Award winning journalist\, author\, and musician Afi Scruggs will conduct the interview and also perform. \nThis is a free event with limited capacity. Please RSVP to attend:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/pre-show-interview-with-wayne-baker-brooks-tickets-342019057207 \nAbout Wayne Baker Brooks: \nWayne Baker Brooks is considered one of today’s top guitarists who’s signature style combines powerful vocals with liquid fire guitar playing that honors his rich blues heritage yet effortlessly expands the boundaries of the genre. \nBorn and raised in Chicago\, IL amongst the most prolific blues legends and blues masters in the world\, Wayne Baker Brook’s blues roots may run deeper and wider than the Great Lakes themselves.  Chicago Blues laid the foundation for Wayne’s innovative style. Growing up Brooks was a regular visitor to such historic places as Chess Studios\, Checkerboard Lounge\, Wisefools\, and many other blues landmarks at which he witnessed many live performances by blues masters like Buddy Guy\, Jr. Wells\, Luther Allison\, KoKo Taylor\, the great Muddy Waters\, & his father. The youngest son of blues master Lonnie Brooks – Wayne Brooks was literally born into the blues!  Leaving no way around the fate appointed him he soon joined his father’s (Lonnie Brooks)  band as his rhythm guitarist then quickly became the musical director. Then in 1997\, he formed the Wayne Baker Brooks Band while continuing to work with his father’s band. He made a cameo appearance in the film Blues Brothers 2000. \nWith the release of his  acclaimed debut CD “Mystery” “an album that brilliantly draws on blues\, blues rock\, soul\, funk and beyond”. “Mystery” received multiple awards and praise from the music world. Along with releasing his book “Blues for Dummies” he was soon touring the world and featured on national TV  programs (including ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, FOX\, & CNN’s “Showbiz”)\, as well as endless radio programs\, print media\, & special media events including performing for First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton at Chess Studios (Willie Dixon Blues Heaven Foundation) with legends Bo Diddley\, Lonnie Brooks\, KoKo Taylor. After Wayne and his special guest exhilarating set\, Hillary stated\, “My husband is going to be so jealous he missed this!”. \nWBB has performed with\, supported/opened for\, and/or appeared on TV with such notables as: Buddy Guy\, Koko Taylor\, Bo Diddley\, Corey Harris\, The Black Crowes\, Otis Rush\, Jr. Wells\, Shemekia Copeland\, Johnny Lang\, Susan Tedeschi\,  Keb Mo\, Jimmy Vivino\, Robert Randolph\, Taj Mahal\, Mick Fleetwood\, Otis Clay\, Bobby Rush\, Elvin Bishop\, Billy Branch and many more… \nWayne Baker Brooks and this Band continue to play the world over with WBB’s signature top-shelf brand of guitar playing and a live show that should not be missed. \nhttps://waynebakerbrooks.com \n  \nAbout Afi Scruggs: \nLove the blues? You’ll love Afi. Love RnB? You’ll love Afi. If you love to groove\, no matter the music\, you’ll definitely want to be in the audience when Afi plays. Whether solo or with her band\, Afi’s mission is to get you swaying and tapping your feet. \nAfi plays bass and keys. She’s a singer-songwriter as well as a producer. No matter the music\, Afi believes in the groove. Listen to her. You’ll hear the groove and you’ll definitely feel it. \nWho is she? \nAfi grew up in Nashville\, Tennessee\, listening to iconic radio stations: The Grand Ole Opry on WSM\, John R on WLAC. Although she was a kid\, she inhaled everything she heard. \nFrom piano lessons as a youngster\, Afi started playing gospel piano when she was 16. As an adult she always flirted with the bass. She’d pick it up\, study for a while and sell the bass. In 2009\, Afi decided to give it one last try\, but she gave herself a mission. This time\, she’d find a place to play. Fast forward. Fulfilling that bucket list item led to starting a band\, producing and releasing original music. \nWhat else does Afi do? Since 2004\, she’s worked as a teaching artist for elementary and high school students\, using music and songwriting for everything from anti-bigotry efforts to financial literacy. She’s also an award-winning journalist and author\, whose work has appeared in USAToday\, Essence.com and on NPR affiliates and programs. \nwww.afiplaysmusic.com

SUMMARY:A History of the Headshot: Anastasia Pantsios and Bridget Caswell
DESCRIPTION:Every band or musician should have a promotional headshot. In the old days\, a photographer like Anastasia Pantsios would be hired to take a few dozen shots in her studio or out at an interesting backdrop. The band would pick a shot from a proofsheet and the negative would be enlarged and printed with a logo as an 8×10 official promo shot that would be given to the press or added to a package handed to venues or promoters so you could look professional enough to be hired. Today you still have to have a good headshot but it’s done digitally and stored on your website or in an EPK (electronic press kit) for press and promoters to grab. This display at Space:ROCK Gallery shows both old and new school images. Anastasia’s work included DEVO\, Michael Stanley\, Spudmonsters\, The Generators and many more. Bridget Caswell recently photographed a handful of aspiring locals at our workshop on March 20 and represents a younger generation of music-loving photographers ready to snap a digital image. We will have a few other more recent images and are compiling a list of available photographers as part of this project.\n\nThanks to the Ohio Arts Council for the support to make this possible.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Cleveland Rock History\, with Deanna Adams and Ray Carr
DESCRIPTION:About the Book\, Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Venues \nCleveland has always been a music town. And thanks to Cleveland deejay\, Alan Freed\, who booked the first venue for rock enthusiasts\, music fans have never lacked for places to go see their favorite acts perform in person. This book honors the astute owners and their venues— from yesterday to today—that present fans with the music they crave. The early clubs helped usher in Cleveland as the designated Rock and Roll Capital of the World. Today’s venues continue the tradition\, thus ensuring that music lovers of all ages\, and attitudes\, get to enjoy their rock and roll on the North Coast\, with all its variety and talent. Because of them\, musical memories keep on being made. \nAbout the Event \nDeanna and Ray will conduct live interviews with many who helped make Cleveland THE Rock and Roll Capital of the World. Hear the music of many decades\, see photographs from Deanna’s new book\, and hear lots – and lots – of Behind-the-Scene Stories! \nSome of those who will be on hand to tell their stories are Janet Macoska (whose many photos are included in the book)\, David Spero\, Billy Bass\, Jim Bonfanti\, Jim Quinn\, George Sipl\, Alan Greene\, Tommy Rich\, Butch Armstrong\, Steve Jochum\, and Jennifer Lee \n  \nDoors Open: 12:30. Books will be for sale\, with Deanna\, Janet Macoska – and anyone who wants to be available for signing books. \n*Ray will be playing music as people come in. \n12:55 – 1:15 p.m. – Ray and I do intro\, talk about our own history a bit\, experiences in Cle rock. *We will have power-point with photos behind us. \n1:15-1:30 – Janet will join us. (Talk about hanging at WKYC studio and getting first photo at 13 of Sonny & Cher\, her history/stories from there). \n1:30 – 1:55 – Bring up David Spero and Billy Bass to talk about their radio careers in Cle. *And bring some good stories! \n2:00 – 2:20 – Note for Musicians: We’ll play snippets of your songs and discuss them (hearing them on radio\, clubs fans saw you at)\, and show fun photos. At approximately 2:20\, we’ll bring up musicians – they’ll be a chair on stage set up for you. \n2:25 – 3:00 – Musician’s Panel – History of playing at clubs\, behind-scene stories. \nWe’ll continue to flip through some band photos on the screen behind us as each of you talk. \nPanel includes: \nJim Bonfanti (to discuss The Choir/Raspberries)\, Jim Quinn (Damnation)\, George Sipl (Eric Carmen\, Breathless\, Etc)\, Alan Greene (Breathless\, Stress\, AGB)\, Tommy Rich (American Noise\, Etc). Butch Armstrong (History before/after Bearcat)\, Steve Jochum (Wild Horses era)\, Jennifer Lee (Ghost Poets\, Resonators) \n3:10 – 3:30 – Sue Csendes (‘NCX\, Live Nation)\, Trenda Jones (Sahara Club) will talk \n3:30- 3:45 – Wrap up with Cindy Barber (On Cle Music Scene today\, clubs\, and also Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present and Future) \n3:45 – 4:30 – Book Signings\, Socializing

SUMMARY:STILL PERFORMANCE Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:STILL PERFORMANCE is an exhibition of more than 80 live concert photographs by 21 Northeast Ohio photographers. Michael Weil\, owner of Foothill Galleries in Cleveland Heights\, conceived of the exhibition as an opportunity to celebrate and raise money for local photographers and live music venues that have seen their revenue streams halted by the pandemic. With the enthusiasm of the Grog Shop’s Kathy Blackman\, we expanded the project from a single gallery show into a Cleveland-wide celebration of 6 decades of stunning images made by talented professionals and amateurs alike—all devout fans of live music. Photographs depict some of the most celebrated musical acts of our time (including Chuck Berry\, Dolly Parton\, Yo-Yo Ma\,  Devo\, Chrissie Hynde\, The Who\, Iggy Pop\, The Rolling Stones\, and Bruce Springsteen) as well as many of Cleveland’s favorite performers at our favorite local stages—past and present.  We feel honored to have a special selection of images of Michael Stanley and MSB included in the exhibition. \nA jury consisting of Fran Belkin\, Kathy Blackman\, Amber Ford\, Michael Loderstedt and Michael Weil chose the final group of images from more than 240 submissions. \nA selection of Still Performance images will go on view beginning June 3\, 4-8pm at Foothill Galleries as well as at the B-Side Lounge below the Grog Shop.  On June 4\, Photocentric Gallery in Collinwood will unveil another selection of the Still Performance images. Later in June\, Blue Sky Brews in Little Italy will show a selection of the images and additional work will go on view at music venues around town including Mahall’s\, The Beachland Ballroom\, the Music Box\, and the Happy Dog. \nAll the images are for sale and proceeds go to the photographers and the non-profit Cleveland Rocks PPF organization that supports local musicians and stages. \nParticipating photographers are: Rustin McCann\, Karen Novak\, Joe Kleon\, Cyndee Burden\, Tom Ziska\, Ken Blaze\, Robert Townsend\, Randy Norfus\, G.M. Donley\, Brian Lumley\, Robert Muller\, Anastasia Pantsios\, Herb Ascherman\, Michael Weil\, Jimmy Davis\, Michael Loderstedt\, Amy Pappas\, Roger Mastroianni\, Jarrod Berger\, Bridget Caswell\, Janet Macoska. \nFor more information\, please contact\nMichael Weil – michael@foothillgalleries.com
