SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Maura Rogers & The Bellows and Wave Magnetik
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. \nMR&B is an Americana band rooted in rock\, folk\, and blues. Female fronted with powerful musicianship. Maura Roger’s passionate vocals and prolific songwriting are supported by lush harmonies\, a dynamic rhythm section\, and intricate arrangements that balance emotional accordion and guitar leads. Their long anticipated third album\, Always —produced by Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple\, Lake Street Dive\, Incubus)\, proves to be the band’s best work to date and delivers a cohesive collection of brilliant musicianship. The musical history of founding band members\, Maura Rogers and Meredith Pangrace\, began with a life-saving kidney transplant in 2012\, and the evolution of their musical collaboration is both compelling and inspiring. Selling out Cleveland’s top venues\, they continue to captivate audiences with their powerful live performances. At the root of music is the capacity to move others\, and the band achieves it with honesty and fervor. Adding Al Moses on lead guitar\, Quinn Hyland on bass\, and Jeff Babinkski on drums has brought a whole new energy\, embracing influences from classic rock’s Fleetwood Mac to modern female powerhouses like Brandi Carlile and Sharon Van Etten. The new album is a huge stepping stone for this well-established Americana band. It defines a mature sound finessed by Wirt’s engineering skills and the band’s new sound.\nwww.maurarogers.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/MauraRogersMusic \nWave Magnetik (producer and trumpeter) and Rowanne Atallah (Lebanese performing artist) have joined musical forces creating melodic infectious dance music symbolizing unity in diversity. Combining Rowanne’s middle eastern roots and Wave’s jazz background\, they have given birth to a new electronic dance music era called “Hayete.”\nwww.wavemagnetik.com/hayete\nhttps://www.facebook.com/wavemagnetik \nSpecial thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for their support of this program.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Bent String and John McGrail
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. \nBent String: We perform a mix of early American roots music\, including acoustic blues and early jazz\, and originals in those styles. Kari’s voice holds center stage\, underpinned with the feel of jazz age swing by Reed Simon’s violin\, Kevin Richards acoustic guitar and Cleveland Blues Hall of Fame upright bassist\, Raymond  DeForest. Dan Bode adds vocals and a horn like approach to harmonica. \nJohn McGrail Trio \nThe New John McGrail Trio is an evolving extension of the music of John McGrail. Originally composed of guitar bass and percussion it has now become the home of guitar\, bass\, flutes and whistles. While still mining the darker side of life lyrically\, musically the loss of one member left the possibility for improvement. Consisting of John McGrail on vocals and guitar\, Jay Bentoff on bass and the latest addition of Sheela Das on flutes and whistles the Trio is embarking on a newer slightly different path. Change is a good thing! \nCategorized as a folk musician he accepts that and on some level even agrees but his influences range far beyond that and they all contribute to the ‘folk’ music that he creates. Analysis of his tunes would find things like odd meters\, Floydian textures\, and the occasional stinging guitar solo. Then there are the lyrics… well there are those who have described him as the Dark Prince of Cleveland Folk. \nNever one to be pigeonholed John uses whatever he has at his disposal to present his music. As of late for live performances it is his trio of Jay Bentoff and Sheela Das. When in the studio he grasps for whatever it is that will get his music across in a manner that makes him happy. Whether it’s loops and programs and virtual instruments or the more traditional type\, one will usually find him using all and blending them in a most unique way. Boundaries are for breaking. \nwww.mindfryenterprises.com\nhttp://www.reverbnation.com/#!/johnmcgrail\nhttp://www.reverbnation.com/#!/theheadwhizconsortmoderneinternationale\nhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/John-McGrail/137931776220239?ref=hl \nMade possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

A little indie rock-a lot of blues-but at the heart of it all\, she’s singer/songwriter with the type of grit that digs straight into your soul. Lamborn proudly calls Cleveland\, Ohio her home. SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Ray Flanagan w/Kevin McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\nFriday\, November 4\, 2022\nRay Flanagan w/Kevin McCarthy\n6:30pm at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd).\nFree Show\n\nRay Flanagan is a Cleveland\, OH based songwriter that writes and performs his songs with the no nonsense attitude of a skilled journeyman. Flanagan has performed with nearly everybody in the Northeast Ohio music scene\, lending his keen musical sense and guitar artistry to artists of all genres. Even though he is one of the most sought after guitarists in Northeast Ohio\, it’s his songwriting that is his true superpower. The shutdown forced Flanagan to mobilize a different outlet for his creativity\, resulting in the quickened pace of releasing two self-produced songs on the first Friday of every month starting in January of 2021. These unfiltered songs offer the listener an authentic experience of a songwriter realizing their potential with every new song. Keeping a mind for music history and a creative target on the present moment\, his songs and lyrics are signposts to his perception of the things that are happening right now.\nhttps://rayflanagan.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://www.rayflanagan.net/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/rayaflanagan\n\n\nKevin McCarthy:\nAt the heart of Kevin McCarthy’s music\, you’ll find welcoming tones of Americana and at once be ensnared by his comforting\, resonant\, heartfelt delivery and variance on tradition. Kevin is a singer-songwriter based in Cleveland\, Ohio by way of San Francisco & New York. Experiences in these cities\, and places between\, brought Kevin to the incredible cast of musicians performing on newly released recordings and touring with him this year. These relationships have shaped his music and filled his songs with authentic connection. McCarthy’s music has been likened to Uncle Tupelo\, Wilco\, Andrew Bird and such soulful singers as Jeff Buckley\, Nick Drake\, and Chris Whitley.\nSince the release of his first EP\, Anchors Away\, in 2003\, Kevin McCarthy continues to write and record exciting\, explorative\, introspective songs. Coming out of the pandemic\, Kevin has crafted and compiled a couple album’s-worth of new music to be released in the coming months. Recording on-location\, at home\, over the internet and around the country\, Kevin produced a full ensemble album featuring synths\, accordion\, melodica\, saxophones\, and a full post-jazz/rock band\, as well as several intimate solo and duo acoustic tracks. He is touring in support of these recordings in the Fall of 2022 and Spring of 2023 throughout the Midwest and East Coast.\nHe has performed and recorded with a notable cast of musicians/composers including Josh Smith\, Kurt Kotheimer\, Scott Barkan\, Jeremy Bleich\, Mike Gamble\, Noah Jarrett\, Conor Elmes\, Daniel Clarke\, Jessie Harper\, Jerry Becker\, Eli Crews\, Michael Coleman\, Stewart Myers\, Brian Jones\, Chris Keup\, and many others. He has shared bills with such notable performers as Marco Benevento\, Robben Ford\, Corey Harris\, Robert Lockwood Jr.\, Carla Kihlstedt\, Jessica Mayfield\, The Blank Tapes\, Dark Star Orchestra and many others.\nwww.corkmusic.com\n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Anita Keys with Blues Chronicles
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians. \nSaturday\, August 20\, 2022\n1pm at The Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show \nAnita Keys is a Jazzy Pop Singer-Songwriter. “I was lucky to have been raised on Music. My father played marimba and organ in a three-piece jazz combo\, The Versatiles\, for thirty years- that’s a photo of them from the 50s!- and my mother has been singing in a church choir her entire adult life. All of my Dad’s siblings- and most of my Mom’s- sang as well\, so family functions were always (literally) filled with harmony. It was only natural then that I would want to sing and play Music\, and my father started teaching me on our livingroom piano when I was very young\, about 5 years old. I took formal lessons from second grade through high school\, and later played in several local cover bands- from Tymz Up and Off The Record to The Band Intense and Beatles Juice- all around the Cleveland area for more than 20 years before deciding to concentrate on my original music.”\nhttps://anitakeys.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/msanitakeys\nhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5IBKbEUcQZF3RlrqCC633Y\n\n\nBlues Chronicles was formed in Cleveland\, Ohio (USA) 2011. Performing as an acoustic duo\, trio or an electric quartet\, their no nonsense approach provides a style that preserves the traditional sound of the blues and reflects their musical influences that originated from the Mississippi Delta\, Piedmont plateau\, Chicago and Memphis.   Following the release of their second recording\, “Right Now” (winner of the Cleveland Blues Society’s\, “best self- produced cd” award in 2012) the trio traveled to Belfort\, France to perform at the FIMU 2012 (Festival International de Musique Universitaire). They were chosen to open and close the four day event. Performing as a duo\, Reese and Al won the Cleveland Blues Society’s Blues Challenge. They represented Cleveland in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, Tennessee.  After winning the Northeast Ohio Blues Association’s blues challenge as an electric quartet\, they represented NEOBA at the 2017 International Blues Challenge \n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians. \nFriday\, June 3\, 2022\n6pm at the Waterloo Tower Stage (Corner of East 156th and Waterloo Rd).\nRain Site: Cleveland Rocks Shop at Music Saves (15801 S Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show\nBring your lawn chairs! \nBirth:\nFormed in 1998\, BIRTH\, the Cleveland-bred saxophone\, electric bass\, drums trio\, carved a musical niche with the sound of their no-holds-barred creative music. Bringing together elements of free jazz\, electro-acoustic improvisation\, rock and melodic balladeering\, this group defies convention\, and executes its music with precision\, and emotive mastery. \nRyan Fletterick and Nolan Cavano (of Oregon Space Trail of Doom): \n“While en route to the cosmos\, the Oregon Space Trail of Doom spaceship crash landed on the Satellite Europa. It seems that their ship suffered from a faulty ABS system and was unable to brake in time before crashing\, but we all know that Tony the drummer really just wanted to see if Europa was inhabitable. Well\, Tony got his wish because just below the radiation laden surface of Europa there was enough Oxygen to supply 7.8 billion people. Stunned but not phased\, Tony ventured off on his lonesome to see if he could fetch some water. Just then\, a giant ice storm appeared and all four band members dispersed: Trevor sought refuge beneath a slab of ice\, while Tony… Disappeared completely. Fortunately Nolan Cavano and Ryan Fletterick were able to escape by changing the fuse to the ABS module and ultimately getting the space shuttle back on track. Knowing they had left Tony and Trevor behind\, Nolan proposed they head back to Earth to try and gather funds for a rescue mission. Well folks\, this gig will solely fund that rescue mission\, and without further adieu I give you the strong\, welcoming talents of solo acoustic sounds\, Ryan Fletterick and Nolan Cavano from the band Oregon Space Trail of Doom. Two guitars\, a harmonica\, and two voices to save their beloved drummer and bassist. Will you help out with the mission? We need them back…” \nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from The Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Shirley Cook with Ava Preston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\nFriday\, May 6\, 2022\n7pm at the Beachland Ballroom\nFree Show\n\n\nShirley Cook:\nShirley Cook is a sultry\, smoky\, and internationally acclaimed jazz singer from Cleveland\, Ohio. Ms. Cook has been bringing her improvisational jazz vocals to the Cleveland music scene for over 36 years. She’s been noted by the Plain Dealer as having a “deep alto voice reminiscent of the late Carmen McRae.” Also\, by the Call & Post for being a “dynamic jazz vocalist who has her own style with ballads and tempos.” Ms. Cook’s captivating and highly interactive performances have a way of making you feel like she’s singing to you and only you. Through her music\, Ms. Cook shares her personal experiences in hopes people will be able to connect and see themselves within her music.\nOver the course of her career\, Ms. Cook has derived numerous aspects of her style from her early roots in the gospel church. Born in Stotesbury\, West Virginia\, Ms. Cook moved to Cleveland at the age of two. At the age of eleven\, she began singing in a gospel music group alongside some of her aunts. They performed for numerous church and social functions throughout the city. Throughout her early life\, Ms. Cook continued to sing with her aunts and through the help of a friend\, was introduced to the inspirational music of the late Billie Holiday\, Etta James\, Abbey Lincoln\, and many more.\nAlong with her work on the stage\, Ms. Cook has devoted many years of her life to the care and nurturance of the Cleveland jazz scene. She has helped to organize the annual Tri-C Jazz Fest on multiple occasions. When asked to organize the event\, Ms. Cook rounded up 72 local musicians in a span of two weeks. Ms. Cook has an astounding record within the community and unceasingly projects her love for jazz in everything she does. Ms. Cook currently resides in the Cleveland area and continues to showcase her charismatic spirit through her performances.\n\n\n\nAva Preston:   \nAva has also performed as a guest singer at a number of national venues including Birdland Jazz Club (New York)\, Bluebird Café (Nashville)\, Andy’s Jazz Café (Chicago) and the Monty Alexander Jazz Festival (Easton\, MD). She has participated in some prestigious summer jazz workshops for vocalists including Grammy Camp\, Stanford Jazz Workshop\, Litchfield Jazz Camp\, New York Voices\, Jazz Port Townsend and Tri-C JazzFest Academy. \nAva sings a variety of genres and languages including songs in French\, Portuguese and Spanish. Ava draws inspiration from jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughn\, Billie Holiday\, Cyrille Aimee and Astrud Gilberto. Ava believes music is a universal language that can unite people and promote acceptance of differences around the world.  \nAva’s mentors include internationally acclaimed trumpeter Dominick Farinacci (TED Speaker & former Global Ambassador to Jazz at Lincoln Center)\, pianist Theron Brown (Director of the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival)\, vocal icon Kim Nazarian (Grammy Nominated New York Voices)\, guitarist Kurt Reed (Director of Fairlawn & Hudson School of Music)\, and singer/songwriter Susan Anders (Acclaimed Nashville Vocal Coach) among others. \nAva’s artistic influences and inspiration are best explained in her own words. She writes:  \n“I find people inspiring most of all. Listening to the vocal “greats” including Ella Fitzgerald\, Billie Holiday\, Sarah Vaughn\, Louis Armstrong and Nina Simone and appreciating their strong voices\, not only in their singing\, but in equality for all\, truly made jazz into a movement as much as a genre. More modern artists such as Sarah Bareilles\, Nora Jones\, Alanis Morissette\, Stevie Nicks\, Eva Cassidy\, Esperanza Spalding\, Jazzmeia Horn\, Jean Baylor\, Somi\, and Diana Krall stimulate my creative expression.  \nI believe that music is a universal language that can unite people around the world. My platforms are dedicated to promoting unity and anti-bullying. My hope is to move society in a positive direction with my art. Although world peace is a nice thought\, I believe it is an unrealistic absolute for a flawed human condition. My goal is to spread world tolerance and the acceptance of differences through my music.” \n\n\nwww.avaprestonmusic.com\n\n\nThis specific show on May 6th is presented in collaboration with Soul City Cleveland\, Fanon Hill’s documentary project that exists as a movement for community education about local culture.\n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from The Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
