SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Total Downer\, Public Squares\, and Jake Sprecher
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. \nJake Sprecher\nJake Sprecher\, from the power pop band The Wind-Ups\, is here in Cleveland from Northern CA. Having worked as a Swiss Army sideman forJonathan Richman since 2016\, frontman Jake has a new 7 inch single “Jonathan Says” on Blue Arrow Records’ label which is a sincere portrait of the special aura that surrounds JR\, run through the saturated analog grit and rhythmic fuzzed out power pop drone that The Wind-Ups are so fond of. The track also features Nicole Montalbano (Jonathan’s partner of the last 30 years) on tamboura.  \nOn side B\, “Medusa’s Spell” is a blast of melodious garage punk in tune with The Wind-Ups usual breakneck pace. And on Blue Arrow’s Bandcamp\, you’ll find two additional tracks rounding out the 7″ as an EP\, including “Little Boy Blue\,” which features Jonathan on lead electric guitar. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHVnyZkxfZc\n  \nTotal Downer\nFor Total Downer\, the Cleveland-based power-pop band spearheaded by Andy Schumann\, friendship is everything. After linking up with Arfil Pajarillaga\, Clay Reid\, and Dante Foley\, the shape of the band’s debut album Caretaker emerged. As performers and songwriters\, Total Downer unleashes a combination of anthemic celebrations and cathartic yelling\, juxtaposing thankfulness and grief for the people they love. To aid in this effort\, Schumann workshopped his lyrics with Denise Zhou and Bella Olivo\, two of his closest artistic confidants. Their edits helped underscore Total Downer’s mission: to release tender music that’s true to experience. That mandate is twofold: the stories they tell\, and encourage their peers to tell\, reckon with their sexualities\, genders\, and notions of death and home. From there\, Total Downer wants to provide listeners with new frameworks to approach their own experiences. As Schumann elaborates: “I especially try to write the songs that I feel I could have really used as a younger person.”\nhttps://www.facebook.com/totaldownerband\ntotaldowner.bandcamp.com \nPublic Squares\nClaiming to be inter-dimensional travelers piloting human bodies\, Public Squares have been evolving since their initial crash landing a few years ago.  A science-fiction aesthetic\, philosophically twisted lyrics and music that can go from reminding you of The Cars to The Misfits before you realize what just happened.  Their first release\, 2018’s “NWR&P” was an official Record Store Day release\, and they followed up with late 2019’s ambitious concept record “From Up There.”  They’re now returning to Earth\, full force\, to celebrate the delivery of their most fully realized collection of songs\, simply titled “HITS!”  Classified as Heavy New Wave\, if you’ve ever wondered what early Cure or Psychedelic Furs might sound like if they were somehow fused with Black Sabbath or Black Flag\, “HITS!” just might have the answer. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/publicsquaresband\npublicsquaresband.com \n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for making this event possible.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Maura Rogers & The Bellows and Wave Magnetik
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. \nMR&B is an Americana band rooted in rock\, folk\, and blues. Female fronted with powerful musicianship. Maura Roger’s passionate vocals and prolific songwriting are supported by lush harmonies\, a dynamic rhythm section\, and intricate arrangements that balance emotional accordion and guitar leads. Their long anticipated third album\, Always —produced by Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple\, Lake Street Dive\, Incubus)\, proves to be the band’s best work to date and delivers a cohesive collection of brilliant musicianship. The musical history of founding band members\, Maura Rogers and Meredith Pangrace\, began with a life-saving kidney transplant in 2012\, and the evolution of their musical collaboration is both compelling and inspiring. Selling out Cleveland’s top venues\, they continue to captivate audiences with their powerful live performances. At the root of music is the capacity to move others\, and the band achieves it with honesty and fervor. Adding Al Moses on lead guitar\, Quinn Hyland on bass\, and Jeff Babinkski on drums has brought a whole new energy\, embracing influences from classic rock’s Fleetwood Mac to modern female powerhouses like Brandi Carlile and Sharon Van Etten. The new album is a huge stepping stone for this well-established Americana band. It defines a mature sound finessed by Wirt’s engineering skills and the band’s new sound.\nwww.maurarogers.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/MauraRogersMusic \nWave Magnetik (producer and trumpeter) and Rowanne Atallah (Lebanese performing artist) have joined musical forces creating melodic infectious dance music symbolizing unity in diversity. Combining Rowanne’s middle eastern roots and Wave’s jazz background\, they have given birth to a new electronic dance music era called “Hayete.”\nwww.wavemagnetik.com/hayete\nhttps://www.facebook.com/wavemagnetik \nSpecial thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for their support of this program.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Bent String and John McGrail
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. \nBent String: We perform a mix of early American roots music\, including acoustic blues and early jazz\, and originals in those styles. Kari’s voice holds center stage\, underpinned with the feel of jazz age swing by Reed Simon’s violin\, Kevin Richards acoustic guitar and Cleveland Blues Hall of Fame upright bassist\, Raymond  DeForest. Dan Bode adds vocals and a horn like approach to harmonica. \nJohn McGrail Trio \nThe New John McGrail Trio is an evolving extension of the music of John McGrail. Originally composed of guitar bass and percussion it has now become the home of guitar\, bass\, flutes and whistles. While still mining the darker side of life lyrically\, musically the loss of one member left the possibility for improvement. Consisting of John McGrail on vocals and guitar\, Jay Bentoff on bass and the latest addition of Sheela Das on flutes and whistles the Trio is embarking on a newer slightly different path. Change is a good thing! \nCategorized as a folk musician he accepts that and on some level even agrees but his influences range far beyond that and they all contribute to the ‘folk’ music that he creates. Analysis of his tunes would find things like odd meters\, Floydian textures\, and the occasional stinging guitar solo. Then there are the lyrics… well there are those who have described him as the Dark Prince of Cleveland Folk. \nNever one to be pigeonholed John uses whatever he has at his disposal to present his music. As of late for live performances it is his trio of Jay Bentoff and Sheela Das. When in the studio he grasps for whatever it is that will get his music across in a manner that makes him happy. Whether it’s loops and programs and virtual instruments or the more traditional type\, one will usually find him using all and blending them in a most unique way. Boundaries are for breaking. \nwww.mindfryenterprises.com\nhttp://www.reverbnation.com/#!/johnmcgrail\nhttp://www.reverbnation.com/#!/theheadwhizconsortmoderneinternationale\nhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/John-McGrail/137931776220239?ref=hl \nMade possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

We have performed since 1997 in bars\,  coffee shops\, art galleries\, bookstores\, the Cleveland Museum of Art\, and Cinemateque playing spoken word\, songs\, and soundtracks to silent films.  The “soundscapes” we create are highly improvised.  Reaching for new sounds has brought us to a deeper understanding of pedals\, effects\, and synthesizers\, and how they can enhance tension and emotional impact in performance.\n\n\n\nDavid Novak:\nNo stranger to writing music and performing live; David Novak returns to the stage as “DA.” The name DA means “this” in ancient hebrew. I think it describes in simplest terms my music and the experience I’m offering audiences. DA is about storytelling\, being in the moment\, and the way music brings people together. That experience should be somewhat indescribable. The listener is encouraged to consider what “this” means to them. Stylistically\, my original music touches on sensitive folk\, dissonant art rock\, and squalling noise rock. David’s work in music has had a meaningful impact in North East Ohio\, and he shares special connections with many of our areas most accomplished musicians. He has been a music teacher\, a club owner\, he has produced acts\, toured the U.S.\, showcased at The Viper Room in Hollywood California\, and worked with producer Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn of Blur/Gorillaz). “I love making music because even with basic elemental forms\, people can still feel music and be drawn to it. DA is an intention\, and is just as much about the live experience as it is the music.”\n\nAJ & The Woods:\nFounded on the sweet nostalgia of delta blues\, AJ & The Woods elevates roots rock to a new height. Their sultry sound features striking female vocals and intricate guitar melodies which organically blends passionate folk\, rock\, and blues music. Home grown in Ohio and established in 2015\, AJ & The Woods brings you one of the most unique and articulate sounds to date.

SUMMARY:Eli "Paperboy" Reed\, Crazy Marvin\, & the New Blues Express
DESCRIPTION:Fred Davis “Cleveland Blues” Release Party \nEli “Paperboy” Reed & Colemine Records present\n\nEli “Paperboy” Reed\, Crazy Marvin\, & the New Blues Express\n  \n\nA letter from Eli “Paperboy” Reed \n“Fred Davis was a legend\, but only in my living room. There was always music around my house\, but as a teenager\, I started digging deeper and deeper into the blues records in my Dad’s collection. That was when I started to get the Fred Davis story in fits and starts. Fred could play like T-Bone Walker and sang in a high\, keen voice like J.B. Lenoir\, he said. He used to front a jump band in Kansas City\, before something went down that sent him to prison at Leavenworth. In the summer of 1967\, he ended up working alongside my Dad at Harco\, the Cleveland factory where my grandfather was an executive. They became friends\, bonding over the B.B. King and Bobby Bland records blaring from the AM radio on the factory floor. \nFred taught my Dad the rudiments of blues guitar\, but his style. Instead of barring with his first finger\, he wrapped his thumb around the back of the neck. That left his other fingers free to create big\, ringing voicings that imitated the Kansas City horn sections he heard in his youth. Fred could play up and down the neck and\, even when he played and sang just by himself\, he sounded like a full band. Or\, at least\, so the legend went. These were only foggy memories from thirty years previous\, passed down from a father to a son. \nBut then we found the tape. A quarter inch reel in a plain white cardboard box\, hiding on a shelf in the attic. My Dad explained how it came to exist: He found some friends (acquaintances really) who had a band and some equipment. They setup in my grandparents living room where the upright piano was\, and he invited Fred over to record some of his songs with the band backing him up. Invited him over\, to play loud music\, in his boss’s living room. Sounds like something I would have done. The idea was that maybe if there were some recordings of Fred that he could use them to get booked on the nascent college blues-revival circuit\, but it wasn’t to be. \nWe found a place nearby that could dub the tape and put it on a CD for us. When we finally got the transfer back\, the legend became real. Fred really COULD sing like J.B. Lenoir and play like T-Bone Walker. He really DID have his own style. And that style had now been passed on to me. Without even realizing it\, I had learned to play like Fred Davis. Even now\, when I sit down to play the guitar or write a song and I wrap my thumb around the neck\, I’m playing like he did. \nWith this music now professionally transferred and remastered\, I can only hope that Fred Davis can finally receive the acclaim that he deserves; that he never received in his lifetime. The legend can finally go behind the confines of my living room and\, with any luck\, to the whole world.” \n– Eli Paperboy Reed\, fall 2022

Fournier grew up in Las Vegas before transplanting to Cleveland\, OH\, where she began playing coffee shops\, open mics\, and touring regionally until eventually forming Niights. She signed with her first label\, 2670 Records (Japan) in 2013 with both a solo EP\, Small Reflections\, and Niights’ debut album\, Whisper\, completing an international tour with each release. Niights later signed to Tragic Hero Records (USA) in 2015. Our neighborhood recording studios and screen printing shops offer workshops\, summer camps and in-school programs that have helped over 11\,000 youth and adults write songs and design t-shirts that address social justice\, education\, and health concerns. Youth grow in confidence and character as they craft their message and build strong relationships. Young adults develop transferable employment and leadership skills while planning\, producing\, and promoting our collaborative work. Professional artists develop new work\, perform community concerts and mentor youth in the heart of the city.\nwww.refreshcollective.org\nhttps://www.facebook.com/refreshcollective/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/refreshthecity \nSpecial thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for supporting this program.

SUMMARY:Brite Winter Festival
DESCRIPTION:A typical February evening on the West Bank of the Flats is pretty quiet. Not so during Brite Winter. The non-profit festival brings together people of all ages\, incomes and backgrounds\, allowing them to discover new music and art and enjoy their community. Spanning ten years\, three locations\, tens of thousands of guests\, hundreds of bands and artists\, and temperatures as low as 8 and as high as 69 degrees—Brite Winter has always been a festival created with the community\, not just for it.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Songwriters in the Round
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy.\nWe are kicking off the 2023 Waterloo Makes Music series with a special Songwriters in the Round showcase! Clare Feorene\, Morgan Mecaskey\, and Taylor Lamborn will join us Sunday\, February 5th\, at the Cleveland Rocks Shop – located in the former Music Saves storefront at 15801 Waterloo Rd. Special thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for supporting this program.\n\nClare Feorene is a singer songwriter and Cleveland native. They write using mellifluous melodies inspired by folk musicians mixed with catchy chord progressions found in indie pop music. They make music to honor life\, its hardships\, and intense joys. First picking up a guitar in 2018 with the desire to join friends in song around the many summer bonfires of their late teens\, a passion for songwriting soon emerged that provided an avenue to explore and process what it means to be human.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/clarefeorene\nlinktr.ee/clarefeorene\n\nMorgan Mecaskey is an American musician\, singer-songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist living in Cleveland\, Ohio. Mecaskey’smusic is a head and heart experience for the listener: earnest lyrics delve into metaphysical questions while vivid soundscapes\, whimsical motifs\, and fat beats build the bold and beguiling music.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/morganmecaskey\nmorganmecaskey.com\n\nTaylor Lamborn‘s sound is just as powerful and full of personality as she is. A little indie rock-a lot of blues-but at the heart of it all\, she’s singer/songwriter with the type of grit that digs straight into your soul. Lamborn proudly calls Cleveland\, Ohio her home. When in town she works as an artist\, performer\, and consultant on vocal arrangement and songwriting. She has released a number of live singles\, three projects\, toured internationally as a solo artist and worked locally with Cleveland legends. Lamborn captivates audiences with her emotive performances. She has played in a variety of venues\, radio stations\, and festivals throughout the continental US. She has notably been sought out by Producers of ABC’s American Idol 2014 and 2015 to be part of the show\, won Cleveland’s 2013 Warner Brothers showcase at House of Blues\, and was featured as Taylor Guitar’s “Player of the Week”.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/TaylorLambornMusic\nhttps://www.taylorlamborn.com/\nlinktr.ee/TaylorLamborn

SUMMARY:The Day Nites
DESCRIPTION:Mark’s Birthday Celebration\nCleveland Soul Sensations\nThe Day Nites\nwith DJ Erin “Hot Trash” Ryan\nSATURDAYJAN 21 \nDoors: 7:00 PM / Show: 8:00 PM\n\nBeachland Tavern\nThe Day Nites are a soul group fronted by soul legend Arthur “Art” Blakey from the Cleveland 1960’s R&B vocal group “The Hesitations”\, supported by members of Wesley Bright & The Hi-Lites. Blakey\, who began singing on the street corners of Cleveland\, was later discovered by Jack Ashford of the infamous Funk Brothers of Motown. After a dramatic rise to success with The Hesitations in the late 1960’s and several hit records\, tragedy and tough times struck the band and Blakey had to find other ways to support his family of 14 children. Blakey\, who has always kept one foot on the stage through the trials and tribulations of life\, was approached by founding members of Wesley Bright & The Hi-Lites to coming back to the stage to share the spirit of the 1960’s soul music that he helped to create\, but with the same grit and style from the days of his youth. \nWith The Day Nites\, Blakey brings his voice to a new audience. Together\, they conjure the raw energy and excitement of the gritty soul music that has made him legendary in the Northern Soul dance craze worldwide.
