SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Refresh Collective with Dee Jay Doc and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. \nOur March show will be a pre-release concert for Dee Jay Doc’s’ album “Trust Belt City.” Hear songs and stories of a hip-hop artist’s journey to make community change in the city he loves. These songs emerged from an artistic life dedicated to seeing Cleveland youth reach their full potential and become leaders to make Cleveland strong\, vibrant and at the forefront of hip-hop innovation. This album was created alongside many of the 10\,000 students Dee Jay Doc worked with in the past decade as he founded Refresh Collective\, which has become a non-profit serving youth in hospitals\, drug treatment centers and schools from Cleveland to Cincinnati.\n\nThis show will feature two sets. The opener set will feature three artists – Nate Willard\, Anti and Quill The Messenger. The second set will feature Dee Jay Doc with guest …Zach.\n\n**** The Cleveland Rocks Shop is an intimate venue with LIMITED capacity. As we expect this show to reach capacity\, we kindly ask you to RSVP to reserve your free ticket to the show. You must arrive at least 10 minutes prior to show time to honor your ticket. Guests will be admitted first come first serve starting at 12:50pm\, as space allows. Thanks for your understanding.****\nTickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/waterloo-makes-music-refresh-collective-with-dee-jay-doc-and-friends-tickets-560611342617\n\n \nDee Jay Doc is a hip-hop artist\, youth cultivator and founder of the Refresh Collective (refreshcollective.org). Voted one of Cleveland’s 30 Most Interesting People in 2017 by Cleveland Magazine he uses hip-hop to increase health and neighborhood vitality. In his 30 years as a hip-hop artist\, he has performed hundreds of shows and helped over 10\,000 students write\, record and perform their own songs. He created the Fresh Camp neighborhood summer hip-hop program in 2011 in his own neighborhood of Glenville in Cleveland\, Ohio. Now\, it has grown into Refresh Collective\, an arts and youth development non-profit organization serving students in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Although\, this work started in his home\, he has opened educational recording studio programs for aspiring young artists in schools\, hospitals\, drug rehab centers as well as community centers. He architects hip-hop programs and empowers the next generation of leaders to do the same.\nhttp://www.deejaydoc.com/ \n…Zach is a rapper\, writer\, and artist from Cleveland\, OH. As a hip-hop journalist\, his work has appeared in DJBooth\, Noisey\, Rolling Stone\, and more\, having interviewed artists over the years such as Ghostface Killah\, GZA\, 50 Cent\, Kehlani\, Mike Dean\, Metro Boomin\, Young Chop\, and more. He is the marketing manager and a lead teacher at Refresh Collective. \nNate Willard is a Cleveland-based Artist/Producer that blends multiple genres into his songwriter-style production. Inspired by electronic dance genres\, jazz-soul-funk-disco\, and indie music his versatile production defines his own genre but also caters to the artist he works with. Whether he’s working his office 9-5 or rocking the stage his motto is the same: “I’m not here to be the best but to serve the best.”\nhttps://www.facebook.com/natewillardmusic \nQuill the Messenger is a hip-hop artist\, author and educator from Milwaukee\, WI with a background in youth work and nonprofit management. His Master’s thesis about the art of emceeing was featured in “Hip-Hop(e): The Cultural Practice and Critical Pedagogy of International Hip-Hop (Adolescent Cultures\, School\, and Society)” which won the 2014 AESA (American Educational Studies Association) Critics Choice Award. \nRefresh Collective is an arts and youth development organization with recording studios + screen printing shops in Cleveland and Cincinnati\, Ohio. We are music producers\, songwriters and screen printers who harness the power of music and fashion to equip youth and uplift communities. Our neighborhood recording studios and screen printing shops offer workshops\, summer camps and in-school programs that have helped over 11\,000 youth and adults write songs and design t-shirts that address social justice\, education\, and health concerns. Youth grow in confidence and character as they craft their message and build strong relationships. Young adults develop transferable employment and leadership skills while planning\, producing\, and promoting our collaborative work. Professional artists develop new work\, perform community concerts and mentor youth in the heart of the city.\nwww.refreshcollective.org\nhttps://www.facebook.com/refreshcollective/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/refreshthecity \nSpecial thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for supporting this program.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Songwriters in the Round
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music is a free concert series on Waterloo as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy.\nWe are kicking off the 2023 Waterloo Makes Music series with a special Songwriters in the Round showcase! Clare Feorene\, Morgan Mecaskey\, and Taylor Lamborn will join us Sunday\, February 5th\, at the Cleveland Rocks Shop – located in the former Music Saves storefront at 15801 Waterloo Rd. Special thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture for supporting this program.\n\nClare Feorene is a singer songwriter and Cleveland native. They write using mellifluous melodies inspired by folk musicians mixed with catchy chord progressions found in indie pop music. They make music to honor life\, its hardships\, and intense joys. First picking up a guitar in 2018 with the desire to join friends in song around the many summer bonfires of their late teens\, a passion for songwriting soon emerged that provided an avenue to explore and process what it means to be human.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/clarefeorene\nlinktr.ee/clarefeorene\n\nMorgan Mecaskey is an American musician\, singer-songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist living in Cleveland\, Ohio. Mecaskey’smusic is a head and heart experience for the listener: earnest lyrics delve into metaphysical questions while vivid soundscapes\, whimsical motifs\, and fat beats build the bold and beguiling music.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/morganmecaskey\nmorganmecaskey.com\n\nTaylor Lamborn‘s sound is just as powerful and full of personality as she is. A little indie rock-a lot of blues-but at the heart of it all\, she’s singer/songwriter with the type of grit that digs straight into your soul. Lamborn proudly calls Cleveland\, Ohio her home. When in town she works as an artist\, performer\, and consultant on vocal arrangement and songwriting. She has released a number of live singles\, three projects\, toured internationally as a solo artist and worked locally with Cleveland legends. Lamborn captivates audiences with her emotive performances. She has played in a variety of venues\, radio stations\, and festivals throughout the continental US. She has notably been sought out by Producers of ABC’s American Idol 2014 and 2015 to be part of the show\, won Cleveland’s 2013 Warner Brothers showcase at House of Blues\, and was featured as Taylor Guitar’s “Player of the Week”.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/TaylorLambornMusic\nhttps://www.taylorlamborn.com/\nlinktr.ee/TaylorLamborn

SUMMARY:The Day Nites
DESCRIPTION:Mark’s Birthday Celebration\nCleveland Soul Sensations\nThe Day Nites\nwith DJ Erin “Hot Trash” Ryan\nSATURDAYJAN 21 \nDoors: 7:00 PM / Show: 8:00 PM\n\nBeachland Tavern\nThe Day Nites are a soul group fronted by soul legend Arthur “Art” Blakey from the Cleveland 1960’s R&B vocal group “The Hesitations”\, supported by members of Wesley Bright & The Hi-Lites. Blakey\, who began singing on the street corners of Cleveland\, was later discovered by Jack Ashford of the infamous Funk Brothers of Motown. After a dramatic rise to success with The Hesitations in the late 1960’s and several hit records\, tragedy and tough times struck the band and Blakey had to find other ways to support his family of 14 children. Blakey\, who has always kept one foot on the stage through the trials and tribulations of life\, was approached by founding members of Wesley Bright & The Hi-Lites to coming back to the stage to share the spirit of the 1960’s soul music that he helped to create\, but with the same grit and style from the days of his youth. \nWith The Day Nites\, Blakey brings his voice to a new audience. Together\, they conjure the raw energy and excitement of the gritty soul music that has made him legendary in the Northern Soul dance craze worldwide.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Ray Flanagan w/Kevin McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\nFriday\, November 4\, 2022\nRay Flanagan w/Kevin McCarthy\n6:30pm at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd).\nFree Show\n\nRay Flanagan is a Cleveland\, OH based songwriter that writes and performs his songs with the no nonsense attitude of a skilled journeyman. Flanagan has performed with nearly everybody in the Northeast Ohio music scene\, lending his keen musical sense and guitar artistry to artists of all genres. Even though he is one of the most sought after guitarists in Northeast Ohio\, it’s his songwriting that is his true superpower. The shutdown forced Flanagan to mobilize a different outlet for his creativity\, resulting in the quickened pace of releasing two self-produced songs on the first Friday of every month starting in January of 2021. These unfiltered songs offer the listener an authentic experience of a songwriter realizing their potential with every new song. Keeping a mind for music history and a creative target on the present moment\, his songs and lyrics are signposts to his perception of the things that are happening right now.\nhttps://rayflanagan.bandcamp.com/\nhttps://www.rayflanagan.net/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/rayaflanagan\n\n\nKevin McCarthy:\nAt the heart of Kevin McCarthy’s music\, you’ll find welcoming tones of Americana and at once be ensnared by his comforting\, resonant\, heartfelt delivery and variance on tradition. Kevin is a singer-songwriter based in Cleveland\, Ohio by way of San Francisco & New York. Experiences in these cities\, and places between\, brought Kevin to the incredible cast of musicians performing on newly released recordings and touring with him this year. These relationships have shaped his music and filled his songs with authentic connection. McCarthy’s music has been likened to Uncle Tupelo\, Wilco\, Andrew Bird and such soulful singers as Jeff Buckley\, Nick Drake\, and Chris Whitley.\nSince the release of his first EP\, Anchors Away\, in 2003\, Kevin McCarthy continues to write and record exciting\, explorative\, introspective songs. Coming out of the pandemic\, Kevin has crafted and compiled a couple album’s-worth of new music to be released in the coming months. Recording on-location\, at home\, over the internet and around the country\, Kevin produced a full ensemble album featuring synths\, accordion\, melodica\, saxophones\, and a full post-jazz/rock band\, as well as several intimate solo and duo acoustic tracks. He is touring in support of these recordings in the Fall of 2022 and Spring of 2023 throughout the Midwest and East Coast.\nHe has performed and recorded with a notable cast of musicians/composers including Josh Smith\, Kurt Kotheimer\, Scott Barkan\, Jeremy Bleich\, Mike Gamble\, Noah Jarrett\, Conor Elmes\, Daniel Clarke\, Jessie Harper\, Jerry Becker\, Eli Crews\, Michael Coleman\, Stewart Myers\, Brian Jones\, Chris Keup\, and many others. He has shared bills with such notable performers as Marco Benevento\, Robben Ford\, Corey Harris\, Robert Lockwood Jr.\, Carla Kihlstedt\, Jessica Mayfield\, The Blank Tapes\, Dark Star Orchestra and many others.\nwww.corkmusic.com\n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Anita Keys with Blues Chronicles
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians. \nSaturday\, August 20\, 2022\n1pm at The Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show \nAnita Keys is a Jazzy Pop Singer-Songwriter. “I was lucky to have been raised on Music. My father played marimba and organ in a three-piece jazz combo\, The Versatiles\, for thirty years- that’s a photo of them from the 50s!- and my mother has been singing in a church choir her entire adult life. All of my Dad’s siblings- and most of my Mom’s- sang as well\, so family functions were always (literally) filled with harmony. It was only natural then that I would want to sing and play Music\, and my father started teaching me on our livingroom piano when I was very young\, about 5 years old. I took formal lessons from second grade through high school\, and later played in several local cover bands- from Tymz Up and Off The Record to The Band Intense and Beatles Juice- all around the Cleveland area for more than 20 years before deciding to concentrate on my original music.”\nhttps://anitakeys.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/msanitakeys\nhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5IBKbEUcQZF3RlrqCC633Y\n\n\nBlues Chronicles was formed in Cleveland\, Ohio (USA) 2011. Performing as an acoustic duo\, trio or an electric quartet\, their no nonsense approach provides a style that preserves the traditional sound of the blues and reflects their musical influences that originated from the Mississippi Delta\, Piedmont plateau\, Chicago and Memphis.   Following the release of their second recording\, “Right Now” (winner of the Cleveland Blues Society’s\, “best self- produced cd” award in 2012) the trio traveled to Belfort\, France to perform at the FIMU 2012 (Festival International de Musique Universitaire). They were chosen to open and close the four day event. Performing as a duo\, Reese and Al won the Cleveland Blues Society’s Blues Challenge. They represented Cleveland in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, Tennessee.  After winning the Northeast Ohio Blues Association’s blues challenge as an electric quartet\, they represented NEOBA at the 2017 International Blues Challenge \n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\nFriday\, August 5\, 2022\nRust Belt Riviera with MOSSOM\n7-9pm at the Waterloo Tower Stage (Corner of East 156th and Waterloo Rd).\nRain Site: Cleveland Rocks Shop at Music Saves (15801 S Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show\nBring Your Lawn Chairs!\n\nRust Belt Riviera:\nRust Belt Riviera is a Rock & Roll Band\, based out of Cleveland’s old Collinwood neighborhood\, with a penchant for writing catchy original songs about growing up and experiencing life in the Midwest.  RBR was formed during a studio session in early 2022\, where local Waterloo resident Scott Stettin and Cleveland native Tony Pappalardo were recording their song Changes (Like a Roller Coaster).  Singer and multi-instrumentalist Jodi Dobos was asked to come in and provide vocal harmonies on the song.  The results of the Demo were exactly what Scott & Tony had in mind for their new project\, and Jodi was immediately asked to join the band full time.  The rest of RBR quickly formed around the trio by adding Euclid drummer Sherri Carmody\, along with Collinwood’s own Chris Kennedy on keyboard & Adam Tully on bass.  The focus of Rustbelt Riviera is to create soulful\, original songs that will have you grooving and singing along to anthems that pay homage to our great city. \n\nMOSSOM:\nMOSSOM [maw’sum] is an original alt rock duo from Cleveland\, Ohio. Their high energy sound broke onto the scene with the release of their 2016 self-titled debut EP\, recorded with multi-platinum record producer\, Michael Seifert. A Waterloo Arts District artist-in-residence for over five years\, the bandsmen took the pandemic to record their first full-length LP\, due to for release later this year.\nMOSSOM is known for their playful prog-meets-pop songwriting\, crossover collaborations\, and live performance chops – all of which conjure up an eclectic range of comparisons to David Byrne\, Rage Against the Machine\, Tool\, Primus and more.\nCoolcleveland.com said\, “Call it ear-splitting\, mind-blowing\, sternum-rattling or earth-shaking. Just don’t think it’s like anything you’ve heard (or seen) before.” Described as “an alternative rock experience with an amazingly original sound\,” by the Fresh Committee\, MOSSOM has been selected for a myriad of regional festivals and sporting events\, performed at Texas Indie Fest at SXSW\, Austin\, as well as\, headlined top venues like House of Blues\, The Beachland Ballroom\, The Agora\, and The Grog Shop.\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION: Contrast Contoured: Portraits of Drag and Burlesque Performers
DESCRIPTION:Maria Neil Art Project (MNAP) and Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present and Future are proud to present this monumental exhibition with photographer Bridget Caswell\, featuring 60+ performers of burlesque and drag. Contrast Contoured will be exhibited across three venues (MNAP\, Space: ROCK gallery\, and neighboring Music SAVES space)\, and include personal portraits and never-before-seen photos of burlesque and drag performers in and out of their stage personas. These images highlight the past several years’ worth of work by Cleveland photographer Caswell. \nBridget Caswell uses her keen eye to capture what many in the LGBTQIA+ community – and the community in general – never get to see: who our favorite performers are without the makeup and feathers. A bonus: the performers add their own words to accompany Bridget’s captivating images. They lay bare why they do what they do and provide details that call you back to look at the ‘before & after’ effect the show presents. Caswell has culminated all these images and words into a book of the same name\, which will be available for purchase through the duration of the exhibition. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, August 5\, 2022 AT 5 PM – 9 PM \nExhibition Dates: Friday\, August 5th through Friday\, October 7th\nSpecial Ohio Burlesque Festival hours: Thursday\, August 11th\, Friday August 12th and Saturday\, August 13th from 5-7p.m. at MNAP (other locations will be open) \nOther hours by appointment\nMaria Neil Art Project 15517 Waterloo Road\nSpace: ROCK gallery 15721 Waterloo Road

SUMMARY:KABOOM COLLECTIVE WITH THE ACCIDENTALS
DESCRIPTION:Kaboom Collective and The Accidentals hit the outdoor PNC stage to bring their unique collaboration to life at the Rock Hall. \nKaboom Collective: Kaboom makes music but also much more. The 40 member Kaboom Studio Orchestra\, is a Hollywood-style industry ensemble that performs and records all of the music at Kaboom. From Video game soundtracks\, to studio albums: from animation scores to live performances\, students in the Studio Orchestra work closely with each of their and team of professional musicians\, educators\, and producers to bring new works and production to life. \nThe Accidentals: Katie and Sav met in their public high school orchestra and became a band after witnessing an immersive workshop by two women that played the same instruments they did. Seeing the possibilities firsthand gave them the courage and empowerment to pursue music beyond the orchestra. They were inspired. They often say that music connected them to friendships and skill sets that changed the trajectory of their lives for the better. Sav and Katie met Liza Grossman\, Conductor and Director of Kaboom Student Orchestra when she reached out about recording one of The Accidentals songs with her orchestra. That process allowed Sav and Katie to work with an orchestra on a whole other level. “Liza was one of the most inspirational teachers we have had the pleasure of working with\, we learned more from her in a week than in any classroom we have been in. ”After 10 years as a band\, multiple major and indie label deals and touring over 5000 live shows and festivals\, The Accidentals started their own non-profit called Play it Forward Again and Again to provide opportunities for students to experience the inspiration that launched their careers.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Martini 5-0 with Michael Eric Schirch
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\n\nSaturday\, July 16\, 2022\nMartini 5-0 with Michael Eric Schirch\n1pm at The Beachland Tavern\nFree Show\n\n\nMartini 5-0: A refreshing blend of jazz standards\, lounge and surf.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/MartiniFiveO\n\nMichael Eric Schirch: Michael Eric Schirch is a chart-topping contemporary jazz pianist\, producer\, and songwriter hailing from Cleveland\, OH. Schirch hit the Cleveland music scene in 2012 with his trio Blu Monsoon\, and with well over 100 public performances per year\, it’s almost impossible to ignore his spicy piano-lead melody lines.\nIn 2018\, Schirch’s “bright ’n’ breezy” single\, “Low Tide” (performed by his trio Blu Monsoon) hit commercial airwaves on 107.3 The Wave in Cleveland\, OH.\, making it to #1 on their “Top Hits” chart. It wasn’t long after that “the Smooth Jazz Network” picked up Low Tide and broadcast it to over 50 radio stations in 26 states. One year later\, his single “You Know That’s Right” hit #3 on 107.3 The Wave and debuted at #4 on One World Radio in the UK.\nSchirch’s musical expertise doesn’t stop with his own compositions though: he also owns a recording studio and production company entitled “Pineapple.studio.” Artists from all over the country choose to work with Schirch as a producer for his distinctive finesse and a certain organic authenticity he brings to their music.\nWhen he’s not on stage or in the studio\, you can find Schirch sipping coffee in Starbucks\, trying new restaurants around Cleveland\, or maybe even playing a little golf (“poorly” – he says.)\nhttps://www.facebook.com/michaelericschirch\nhttp://michaelericschirch.com\n\n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
