SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Anita Keys with Blues Chronicles
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians. \nSaturday\, August 20\, 2022\n1pm at The Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show \nAnita Keys is a Jazzy Pop Singer-Songwriter. “I was lucky to have been raised on Music. My father played marimba and organ in a three-piece jazz combo\, The Versatiles\, for thirty years- that’s a photo of them from the 50s!- and my mother has been singing in a church choir her entire adult life. All of my Dad’s siblings- and most of my Mom’s- sang as well\, so family functions were always (literally) filled with harmony. It was only natural then that I would want to sing and play Music\, and my father started teaching me on our livingroom piano when I was very young\, about 5 years old. I took formal lessons from second grade through high school\, and later played in several local cover bands- from Tymz Up and Off The Record to The Band Intense and Beatles Juice- all around the Cleveland area for more than 20 years before deciding to concentrate on my original music.”\nhttps://anitakeys.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/msanitakeys\nhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5IBKbEUcQZF3RlrqCC633Y\n\n\nBlues Chronicles was formed in Cleveland\, Ohio (USA) 2011. Performing as an acoustic duo\, trio or an electric quartet\, their no nonsense approach provides a style that preserves the traditional sound of the blues and reflects their musical influences that originated from the Mississippi Delta\, Piedmont plateau\, Chicago and Memphis.   Following the release of their second recording\, “Right Now” (winner of the Cleveland Blues Society’s\, “best self- produced cd” award in 2012) the trio traveled to Belfort\, France to perform at the FIMU 2012 (Festival International de Musique Universitaire). They were chosen to open and close the four day event. Performing as a duo\, Reese and Al won the Cleveland Blues Society’s Blues Challenge. They represented Cleveland in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, Tennessee.  After winning the Northeast Ohio Blues Association’s blues challenge as an electric quartet\, they represented NEOBA at the 2017 International Blues Challenge \n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Rust Belt Riviera with MOSSOM
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\nFriday\, August 5\, 2022\nRust Belt Riviera with MOSSOM\n7-9pm at the Waterloo Tower Stage (Corner of East 156th and Waterloo Rd).\nRain Site: Cleveland Rocks Shop at Music Saves (15801 S Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show\nBring Your Lawn Chairs!\n\nRust Belt Riviera:\nRust Belt Riviera is a Rock & Roll Band\, based out of Cleveland’s old Collinwood neighborhood\, with a penchant for writing catchy original songs about growing up and experiencing life in the Midwest.  RBR was formed during a studio session in early 2022\, where local Waterloo resident Scott Stettin and Cleveland native Tony Pappalardo were recording their song Changes (Like a Roller Coaster).  Singer and multi-instrumentalist Jodi Dobos was asked to come in and provide vocal harmonies on the song.  The results of the Demo were exactly what Scott & Tony had in mind for their new project\, and Jodi was immediately asked to join the band full time.  The rest of RBR quickly formed around the trio by adding Euclid drummer Sherri Carmody\, along with Collinwood’s own Chris Kennedy on keyboard & Adam Tully on bass.  The focus of Rustbelt Riviera is to create soulful\, original songs that will have you grooving and singing along to anthems that pay homage to our great city. \n\nMOSSOM:\nMOSSOM [maw’sum] is an original alt rock duo from Cleveland\, Ohio. Their high energy sound broke onto the scene with the release of their 2016 self-titled debut EP\, recorded with multi-platinum record producer\, Michael Seifert. A Waterloo Arts District artist-in-residence for over five years\, the bandsmen took the pandemic to record their first full-length LP\, due to for release later this year.\nMOSSOM is known for their playful prog-meets-pop songwriting\, crossover collaborations\, and live performance chops – all of which conjure up an eclectic range of comparisons to David Byrne\, Rage Against the Machine\, Tool\, Primus and more.\nCoolcleveland.com said\, “Call it ear-splitting\, mind-blowing\, sternum-rattling or earth-shaking. Just don’t think it’s like anything you’ve heard (or seen) before.” Described as “an alternative rock experience with an amazingly original sound\,” by the Fresh Committee\, MOSSOM has been selected for a myriad of regional festivals and sporting events\, performed at Texas Indie Fest at SXSW\, Austin\, as well as\, headlined top venues like House of Blues\, The Beachland Ballroom\, The Agora\, and The Grog Shop.\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION: Contrast Contoured: Portraits of Drag and Burlesque Performers
DESCRIPTION:Maria Neil Art Project (MNAP) and Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present and Future are proud to present this monumental exhibition with photographer Bridget Caswell\, featuring 60+ performers of burlesque and drag. Contrast Contoured will be exhibited across three venues (MNAP\, Space: ROCK gallery\, and neighboring Music SAVES space)\, and include personal portraits and never-before-seen photos of burlesque and drag performers in and out of their stage personas. These images highlight the past several years’ worth of work by Cleveland photographer Caswell. \nBridget Caswell uses her keen eye to capture what many in the LGBTQIA+ community – and the community in general – never get to see: who our favorite performers are without the makeup and feathers. A bonus: the performers add their own words to accompany Bridget’s captivating images. They lay bare why they do what they do and provide details that call you back to look at the ‘before & after’ effect the show presents. Caswell has culminated all these images and words into a book of the same name\, which will be available for purchase through the duration of the exhibition. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, August 5\, 2022 AT 5 PM – 9 PM \nExhibition Dates: Friday\, August 5th through Friday\, October 7th\nSpecial Ohio Burlesque Festival hours: Thursday\, August 11th\, Friday August 12th and Saturday\, August 13th from 5-7p.m. at MNAP (other locations will be open) \nOther hours by appointment\nMaria Neil Art Project 15517 Waterloo Road\nSpace: ROCK gallery 15721 Waterloo Road

SUMMARY:KABOOM COLLECTIVE WITH THE ACCIDENTALS
DESCRIPTION:Kaboom Collective and The Accidentals hit the outdoor PNC stage to bring their unique collaboration to life at the Rock Hall. \nKaboom Collective: Kaboom makes music but also much more. The 40 member Kaboom Studio Orchestra\, is a Hollywood-style industry ensemble that performs and records all of the music at Kaboom. From Video game soundtracks\, to studio albums: from animation scores to live performances\, students in the Studio Orchestra work closely with each of their and team of professional musicians\, educators\, and producers to bring new works and production to life. \nThe Accidentals: Katie and Sav met in their public high school orchestra and became a band after witnessing an immersive workshop by two women that played the same instruments they did. Seeing the possibilities firsthand gave them the courage and empowerment to pursue music beyond the orchestra. They were inspired. They often say that music connected them to friendships and skill sets that changed the trajectory of their lives for the better. Sav and Katie met Liza Grossman\, Conductor and Director of Kaboom Student Orchestra when she reached out about recording one of The Accidentals songs with her orchestra. That process allowed Sav and Katie to work with an orchestra on a whole other level. “Liza was one of the most inspirational teachers we have had the pleasure of working with\, we learned more from her in a week than in any classroom we have been in. ”After 10 years as a band\, multiple major and indie label deals and touring over 5000 live shows and festivals\, The Accidentals started their own non-profit called Play it Forward Again and Again to provide opportunities for students to experience the inspiration that launched their careers.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Martini 5-0 with Michael Eric Schirch
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\n\nSaturday\, July 16\, 2022\nMartini 5-0 with Michael Eric Schirch\n1pm at The Beachland Tavern\nFree Show\n\n\nMartini 5-0: A refreshing blend of jazz standards\, lounge and surf.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/MartiniFiveO\n\nMichael Eric Schirch: Michael Eric Schirch is a chart-topping contemporary jazz pianist\, producer\, and songwriter hailing from Cleveland\, OH. Schirch hit the Cleveland music scene in 2012 with his trio Blu Monsoon\, and with well over 100 public performances per year\, it’s almost impossible to ignore his spicy piano-lead melody lines.\nIn 2018\, Schirch’s “bright ’n’ breezy” single\, “Low Tide” (performed by his trio Blu Monsoon) hit commercial airwaves on 107.3 The Wave in Cleveland\, OH.\, making it to #1 on their “Top Hits” chart. It wasn’t long after that “the Smooth Jazz Network” picked up Low Tide and broadcast it to over 50 radio stations in 26 states. One year later\, his single “You Know That’s Right” hit #3 on 107.3 The Wave and debuted at #4 on One World Radio in the UK.\nSchirch’s musical expertise doesn’t stop with his own compositions though: he also owns a recording studio and production company entitled “Pineapple.studio.” Artists from all over the country choose to work with Schirch as a producer for his distinctive finesse and a certain organic authenticity he brings to their music.\nWhen he’s not on stage or in the studio\, you can find Schirch sipping coffee in Starbucks\, trying new restaurants around Cleveland\, or maybe even playing a little golf (“poorly” – he says.)\nhttps://www.facebook.com/michaelericschirch\nhttp://michaelericschirch.com\n\n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Birth with Ryan Fletterick and Nolan Cavano (of Oregon Space Trail of Doom)
\nFriday\, June 3\, 2022\n6pm at the Waterloo Tower Stage (Corner of East 156th and Waterloo Rd).\nRain Site: Cleveland Rocks Shop at Music Saves (15801 S Waterloo Rd)\nFree Show\nBring your lawn chairs! \nBirth:\nFormed in 1998\, BIRTH\, the Cleveland-bred saxophone\, electric bass\, drums trio\, carved a musical niche with the sound of their no-holds-barred creative music. Bringing together elements of free jazz\, electro-acoustic improvisation\, rock and melodic balladeering\, this group defies convention\, and executes its music with precision\, and emotive mastery. \nRyan Fletterick and Nolan Cavano (of Oregon Space Trail of Doom): \n“While en route to the cosmos\, the Oregon Space Trail of Doom spaceship crash landed on the Satellite Europa. It seems that their ship suffered from a faulty ABS system and was unable to brake in time before crashing\, but we all know that Tony the drummer really just wanted to see if Europa was inhabitable. Well\, Tony got his wish because just below the radiation laden surface of Europa there was enough Oxygen to supply 7.8 billion people. Stunned but not phased\, Tony ventured off on his lonesome to see if he could fetch some water. Just then\, a giant ice storm appeared and all four band members dispersed: Trevor sought refuge beneath a slab of ice\, while Tony… Disappeared completely. Fortunately Nolan Cavano and Ryan Fletterick were able to escape by changing the fuse to the ABS module and ultimately getting the space shuttle back on track. Knowing they had left Tony and Trevor behind\, Nolan proposed they head back to Earth to try and gather funds for a rescue mission. Well folks\, this gig will solely fund that rescue mission\, and without further adieu I give you the strong\, welcoming talents of solo acoustic sounds\, Ryan Fletterick and Nolan Cavano from the band Oregon Space Trail of Doom. Two guitars\, a harmonica\, and two voices to save their beloved drummer and bassist. Will you help out with the mission? We need them back…” \nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from The Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

SUMMARY:Pre-Show Interview with Wayne Baker Brooks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pre-show interview with Wayne Baker Brooks at 6pm on Friday\, May 27th at the future home of the Cleveland Rocks Shop (former Music Saves storefront). Award winning journalist\, author\, and musician Afi Scruggs will conduct the interview and also perform. \nThis is a free event with limited capacity. Please RSVP to attend:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/pre-show-interview-with-wayne-baker-brooks-tickets-342019057207 \nAbout Wayne Baker Brooks: \nWayne Baker Brooks is considered one of today’s top guitarists who’s signature style combines powerful vocals with liquid fire guitar playing that honors his rich blues heritage yet effortlessly expands the boundaries of the genre. \nBorn and raised in Chicago\, IL amongst the most prolific blues legends and blues masters in the world\, Wayne Baker Brook’s blues roots may run deeper and wider than the Great Lakes themselves.  Chicago Blues laid the foundation for Wayne’s innovative style. Growing up Brooks was a regular visitor to such historic places as Chess Studios\, Checkerboard Lounge\, Wisefools\, and many other blues landmarks at which he witnessed many live performances by blues masters like Buddy Guy\, Jr. Wells\, Luther Allison\, KoKo Taylor\, the great Muddy Waters\, & his father. The youngest son of blues master Lonnie Brooks – Wayne Brooks was literally born into the blues!  Leaving no way around the fate appointed him he soon joined his father’s (Lonnie Brooks)  band as his rhythm guitarist then quickly became the musical director. Then in 1997\, he formed the Wayne Baker Brooks Band while continuing to work with his father’s band. He made a cameo appearance in the film Blues Brothers 2000. \nWith the release of his  acclaimed debut CD “Mystery” “an album that brilliantly draws on blues\, blues rock\, soul\, funk and beyond”. “Mystery” received multiple awards and praise from the music world. Along with releasing his book “Blues for Dummies” he was soon touring the world and featured on national TV  programs (including ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, FOX\, & CNN’s “Showbiz”)\, as well as endless radio programs\, print media\, & special media events including performing for First Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton at Chess Studios (Willie Dixon Blues Heaven Foundation) with legends Bo Diddley\, Lonnie Brooks\, KoKo Taylor. After Wayne and his special guest exhilarating set\, Hillary stated\, “My husband is going to be so jealous he missed this!”. \nWBB has performed with\, supported/opened for\, and/or appeared on TV with such notables as: Buddy Guy\, Koko Taylor\, Bo Diddley\, Corey Harris\, The Black Crowes\, Otis Rush\, Jr. Wells\, Shemekia Copeland\, Johnny Lang\, Susan Tedeschi\,  Keb Mo\, Jimmy Vivino\, Robert Randolph\, Taj Mahal\, Mick Fleetwood\, Otis Clay\, Bobby Rush\, Elvin Bishop\, Billy Branch and many more… \nWayne Baker Brooks and this Band continue to play the world over with WBB’s signature top-shelf brand of guitar playing and a live show that should not be missed. \nhttps://waynebakerbrooks.com \n  \nAbout Afi Scruggs: \nLove the blues? You’ll love Afi. Love RnB? You’ll love Afi. If you love to groove\, no matter the music\, you’ll definitely want to be in the audience when Afi plays. Whether solo or with her band\, Afi’s mission is to get you swaying and tapping your feet. \nAfi plays bass and keys. She’s a singer-songwriter as well as a producer. No matter the music\, Afi believes in the groove. Listen to her. You’ll hear the groove and you’ll definitely feel it. \nWho is she? \nAfi grew up in Nashville\, Tennessee\, listening to iconic radio stations: The Grand Ole Opry on WSM\, John R on WLAC. Although she was a kid\, she inhaled everything she heard. \nFrom piano lessons as a youngster\, Afi started playing gospel piano when she was 16. As an adult she always flirted with the bass. She’d pick it up\, study for a while and sell the bass. In 2009\, Afi decided to give it one last try\, but she gave herself a mission. This time\, she’d find a place to play. Fast forward. Fulfilling that bucket list item led to starting a band\, producing and releasing original music. \nWhat else does Afi do? Since 2004\, she’s worked as a teaching artist for elementary and high school students\, using music and songwriting for everything from anti-bigotry efforts to financial literacy. She’s also an award-winning journalist and author\, whose work has appeared in USAToday\, Essence.com and on NPR affiliates and programs. \nwww.afiplaysmusic.com

SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music: Shirley Cook with Ava Preston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Waterloo Makes Music (WMM) is a free concert series\, programmed by Cleveland Rocks: Past\, Present\, Future\, as a gift to all the music lovers in the community\, and a celebration of Cleveland’s amazing musical legacy. Held in the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District\, the Tower series features local Waterloo area bands/musicians.\n\nFriday\, May 6\, 2022\n7pm at the Beachland Ballroom\nFree Show\n\n\nShirley Cook:\nShirley Cook is a sultry\, smoky\, and internationally acclaimed jazz singer from Cleveland\, Ohio. Ms. Cook has been bringing her improvisational jazz vocals to the Cleveland music scene for over 36 years. She’s been noted by the Plain Dealer as having a “deep alto voice reminiscent of the late Carmen McRae.” Also\, by the Call & Post for being a “dynamic jazz vocalist who has her own style with ballads and tempos.” Ms. Cook’s captivating and highly interactive performances have a way of making you feel like she’s singing to you and only you. Through her music\, Ms. Cook shares her personal experiences in hopes people will be able to connect and see themselves within her music.\nOver the course of her career\, Ms. Cook has derived numerous aspects of her style from her early roots in the gospel church. Born in Stotesbury\, West Virginia\, Ms. Cook moved to Cleveland at the age of two. At the age of eleven\, she began singing in a gospel music group alongside some of her aunts. They performed for numerous church and social functions throughout the city. Throughout her early life\, Ms. Cook continued to sing with her aunts and through the help of a friend\, was introduced to the inspirational music of the late Billie Holiday\, Etta James\, Abbey Lincoln\, and many more.\nAlong with her work on the stage\, Ms. Cook has devoted many years of her life to the care and nurturance of the Cleveland jazz scene. She has helped to organize the annual Tri-C Jazz Fest on multiple occasions. When asked to organize the event\, Ms. Cook rounded up 72 local musicians in a span of two weeks. Ms. Cook has an astounding record within the community and unceasingly projects her love for jazz in everything she does. Ms. Cook currently resides in the Cleveland area and continues to showcase her charismatic spirit through her performances.\n\n\n\nAva Preston:   \nAva has also performed as a guest singer at a number of national venues including Birdland Jazz Club (New York)\, Bluebird Café (Nashville)\, Andy’s Jazz Café (Chicago) and the Monty Alexander Jazz Festival (Easton\, MD). She has participated in some prestigious summer jazz workshops for vocalists including Grammy Camp\, Stanford Jazz Workshop\, Litchfield Jazz Camp\, New York Voices\, Jazz Port Townsend and Tri-C JazzFest Academy. \nAva sings a variety of genres and languages including songs in French\, Portuguese and Spanish. Ava draws inspiration from jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughn\, Billie Holiday\, Cyrille Aimee and Astrud Gilberto. Ava believes music is a universal language that can unite people and promote acceptance of differences around the world.  \nAva’s mentors include internationally acclaimed trumpeter Dominick Farinacci (TED Speaker & former Global Ambassador to Jazz at Lincoln Center)\, pianist Theron Brown (Director of the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival)\, vocal icon Kim Nazarian (Grammy Nominated New York Voices)\, guitarist Kurt Reed (Director of Fairlawn & Hudson School of Music)\, and singer/songwriter Susan Anders (Acclaimed Nashville Vocal Coach) among others. \nAva’s artistic influences and inspiration are best explained in her own words. She writes:  \n“I find people inspiring most of all. Listening to the vocal “greats” including Ella Fitzgerald\, Billie Holiday\, Sarah Vaughn\, Louis Armstrong and Nina Simone and appreciating their strong voices\, not only in their singing\, but in equality for all\, truly made jazz into a movement as much as a genre. More modern artists such as Sarah Bareilles\, Nora Jones\, Alanis Morissette\, Stevie Nicks\, Eva Cassidy\, Esperanza Spalding\, Jazzmeia Horn\, Jean Baylor\, Somi\, and Diana Krall stimulate my creative expression.  \nI believe that music is a universal language that can unite people around the world. My platforms are dedicated to promoting unity and anti-bullying. My hope is to move society in a positive direction with my art. Although world peace is a nice thought\, I believe it is an unrealistic absolute for a flawed human condition. My goal is to spread world tolerance and the acceptance of differences through my music.” \n\n\nwww.avaprestonmusic.com\n\n\nThis specific show on May 6th is presented in collaboration with Soul City Cleveland\, Fanon Hill’s documentary project that exists as a movement for community education about local culture.\n\n\nThe WMM Series is made possible with support from The Ohio Arts Council and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
