SUMMARY:A History of the Headshot: Anastasia Pantsios and Bridget Caswell
DESCRIPTION:Every band or musician should have a promotional headshot. In the old days\, a photographer like Anastasia Pantsios would be hired to take a few dozen shots in her studio or out at an interesting backdrop. The band would pick a shot from a proofsheet and the negative would be enlarged and printed with a logo as an 8×10 official promo shot that would be given to the press or added to a package handed to venues or promoters so you could look professional enough to be hired. Today you still have to have a good headshot but it’s done digitally and stored on your website or in an EPK (electronic press kit) for press and promoters to grab. This display at Space:ROCK Gallery shows both old and new school images. Anastasia’s work included DEVO\, Michael Stanley\, Spudmonsters\, The Generators and many more. Bridget Caswell recently photographed a handful of aspiring locals at our workshop on March 20 and represents a younger generation of music-loving photographers ready to snap a digital image. We will have a few other more recent images and are compiling a list of available photographers as part of this project.\n\nThanks to the Ohio Arts Council for the support to make this possible.

SUMMARY:Cory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts
DESCRIPTION:Friday Feb. 18\, 2022 at 8:00pm\nThe Akron Civic Knight Stage\nTickets are $20\, but if you call the box office directly\, (330-253-248) the tickets are $15. \n\nCory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts\, a Cleveland based honky-tonk band\, comes forth with a new album of old school Bakersfield-style country chock full of hard driving trucker tunes\, country waltzes and groovin’ hillbilly jams. The 10 tracks on their latest release – “Honky Tonkin’ Beauty Supreme” – more than exemplify their Playboy Scout oath of “On my honor I will do my duty to Two Step Dancers and Honky Tonkers everywhere.” The band\, who play original hillbilly tunes inspired by artists like Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard\, formed in Cleveland in 2016 and released their debut album “Cahoots and Other Favorites” in the Fall of 2018. Since then\, the band has taken to the road and toured through several different states throughout the Midwest\, South\, and Southwest. They are affectionately known for their blue bus and encouraging others to join their troop. \nHealth and safety update:\nIn response to the recent surge in the number of COVID cases in Summit County and in keeping with CDC guidance regarding indoor events\, all patrons\, regardless of vaccination status\, are required to wear a mask upon entering the building and at all times except when actively eating or drinking. This policy takes effect immediately and will be reviewed periodically relative to COVID cases in Summit County.

SUMMARY:Los Straitjackets w/Cory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts
DESCRIPTION:Los Straitjackets\nLos Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures\, The Shadows\, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point\, the band has taken their unique\, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. \nClad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks\, the ‘Jackets’ have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums\, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows. Viva Los Straitjackets! \nCory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts\nPlayboy Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my duty to Two Step Dancers and Honky Tonkers everywhere.” From Akron and Cleveland\, Ohio\, Cory Grinder and the Playboy Scouts take honky tonkin very seriously. Grinder started the band in 2016 when multiple hillbilly groups he played fiddle with fizzled out. Along with some other displaced musicians from these bands\, The Cory Grinder Band was formed. Stephen Karney\, known as “Tebbs\,” provides the silky\, smooth sounds of the pedal steel which drives the group along with harmony vocals. The low end is expertly handled on upright bass by Jason Willis. Leading the group on guitar and fiddle\, Cory Grinder writes original country tunes influenced by favorites like Merle Haggard\, Roger Miller\, and Willie Nelson. 2018 saw the release of their first album\, “Cahoots and Other Favorites\,” recorded with Grammy and Emmy nominated producer\, David Mayfield. That year also saw the addition of the very talented drummer\, Brian Roberts. Since then\, the band has taken to the road and toured through Nashville\, Pittsburgh\, New Orleans\, Chicago\, Texas\, North Carolina\, Detroit\, and more. Performance highlights include featuring Kenny Vaughan from Marty Stuart’s Fabulous Superlatives on guitar for a Nashville show. Plus Dale Watson inviting them to perform as his backing band for a set at legendary Texas venues The Broken Spoke and Continental Club. Up next for The Playboy Scouts is their instrumental Christmas album\, “Silver & Gold\, Fiddle & Steel.” A collection of classic Christmas songs with some country flair featuring Tebbs and Grinder\, available Nov. 1st. Plus Spring 2020 will see the release of their next full length\, original album\, “Honky Tonkin Beauty Supreme.” Lots of fun things are coming for these honky tonkers so join The Playboy Scouts and GET YOUR BADGES!

SUMMARY:John Lennon Remembers – A Night of John Lennon Songs & Tributes
DESCRIPTION:Ever read a list of “people who changed the world?” You’ll find a lot of influential names–spiritual leaders\, scientists\, inventors\, politicians–people whose lives\, for better or worse\, had significant and lasting effects on cultures and society. \nOn lists who changed the world for better\, you’ll find some from the arts. What vision\, to be remembered along side Albert Einstein and Jesus Christ\, credited with a long legacy of influence. I assure you\, very few rock stars are on these lists. \nThe shining jewel of influential rock stars\, in many eyes\, is John Lennon. Cream of the crop\, bees-knees\, cats pajamas\, or “toppermost of the poppermost” (a phrase he coined in the 1960s)\, Lennon’s catalog of music\, along side his outspoken activism\, has had lasting effect on so many aspects of society\, including pop culture\, spiritualism\, politics\, and of course\, music. \nThe music of John Lennon has caused intense reactions from listeners\, ever since the days of screaming throngs of enthusiasts descending on airports. It may have all started with catchy\, infectious hooks such as\, “yeah\, yeah\, yeah\,” (She Loves You\, 1964)\, but the hooks like\, “All You Need is Love\,” “Give Peace a Chance\,” and “…imagine all the people…” are only a few examples in Lennon’s catalog of influence that the world needed and wanted\, in the 1060s\, and well into the 21st century. \nOn December 8th\, 2021\, a collection of artists and performers from the Greater Cleveland Area gather at the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd) in Cleveland to honor John Lennon’s legacy by performing his songs over the course of the evening during the John Lennon Tribute Concert. \nThe brain-child of Kendall Stauffer (Local Tavern Fish Bar\, Painesville)\, the John Lennon Tribute Concert has run annually for many seasons. With COVID safety standards in mind\, the Beachland is delighted to bring this event back\, typically near Lennon’s date of birth (Oct 9th\, 1940) or death (Dec 8\, 1980). \n2021’s line up to-date includes: \nBeth Woyshville \nAnita Herzog \nMarc Stauffer Kendall Stauffer\, August Stauffer\, Edward Stauffer\, Russell Stauffer \nAlex Bevan \nCollette Gschwind \nTracie Marie \nTommy Grasso \nRicky and the rockets \nBill March \nMelissa green Harvey and Mitch Larson \nJohn Walsh \nMark Klein \nPaul Fresty \nGary Lee \nAndy Ulle \nAl Struck plus band \nAl Struck \nDale Taylor \nDavid Kraus \nJohn Augustjatis \nTom Provenzale \nThe Jets featuring Angelle Sheridan \nJim Bonfanti \nBy Video \nBilly Sullivan (at Herman hermits gig so sending video) \nBill Hatch in memoriam \n$5 donation goes to Cleveland Rocks: Past Present Future \nCan’t make the event? SUMMARY:Waterloo Makes Music w/Nancy Redd-Shelton and the 9th Street Tuna Band
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland Rocks: Past Present Future has been creating free public concerts in the Waterloo Arts and Entertainment district for the past 4 years and we are back at again in 2021\, as we all emerge from the COVID shutdown of the past 14 months. The impacts of COVID-19 have been dire for working musicians and the music industry as a whole. Last year we had to pivot and do virtual concerts\, but were able to pay our scheduled musicians and actually help expand audiences because of the added online reach. This year we hope to do both live and live streaming. \nThis month’s event will feature Nancy Redd-Shelton and the 9th Street Tuna Band. \nWatch the Livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wck78kjNi4 \nNancy Redd-Shelton: The Sounds of Jazz featuring Nancy  Redd on Flute and Vocals originated in 2004. The Sounds of Jazz is a mix of Jazz and Pop Standards. The Sounds of Jazz continues to celebrate the authenticity and origins of  “REAL JAZZ” with a hint of smooth jazz and pop standards. \nMary Martin and the 9th Street Tuna Band: The band has been a mainstay on the Cleveland music scene\, for the last 40 years.  Their style\, runs the range from blues to jazz\, original to covers.  And always\, always\, a delight to hear…. \nThe Waterloo Makes Music series will take place the first Friday of the month June-September as part of the monthly Walk All Over Waterloo art walk. Your support allows us to again pay musicians and the production team needed to mount our Waterloo Makes Music series.
